Cost basis, market value, and asking price are three different numbers

Why CardHunt keeps acquisition cost, estimated market value, and your asking price separate in Portfolio.

Cost basis records what you paid

Cost basis starts with the per-card acquisition price you record. For a multi-copy holding, CardHunt multiplies that unit price by quantity. When another ungraded copy is merged into the same holding, the unit cost becomes a quantity-weighted average.

Estimated market value follows comparable sales

Market value is an estimate based on pricing data available to CardHunt. A card can temporarily show as pricing unavailable when there are not enough usable comparisons. That is different from a zero-dollar asking price or a missing acquisition cost.

Asking price is your decision

An asking price is the amount you choose to track for a holding marked for sale. It does not change market value, cost basis, or unrealized gain and loss. Keeping it separate prevents a seller’s preference from being mistaken for a market signal.
